Join our Gorham & Portland trailwork days!

Excited about our 1st MTB-specific trail w/Portland Trails??<!–

Hey folks,

Welcome back! First thing you might have noticed is our new poster for our 2025 season. We’re still retaining our traditional logo, but we worked with local artist Yai Deng to capture the scale of our “service territory” and our mission. Expect to see it more in the weeks to come. Hope you like it!

I also wanted to thank the nearly 600 of you (597 to be precise) who are currently supporting our work as active GPNEMBA members. We put that money to work again this past week buying rakes, shovels, and other tools to help us lead the maintenance of Riverton Trolley Bike Park, and put ’em to work right away patching up berms & modifying a jump in the advanced line that just wasn’t working perfectly. If you’ve been enjoying ripping laps there and want to help keep it in top shape, sign up here for our Portland Trail crew.

Back to the poster. It’s almost a running joke on our board now — world class everything!! — but it endures because we’re getting closer every week to making it a reality. Touring the Executive Director of NEMBA (thanks for swinging by, Nicole!) around both Lowell and East Windham this week reminded me how far we’ve come, especially in that final, grin-inducing descent down #2/Stranger Things into the last of the daylight, the bike compressing into the multiple deep transitions, the mechanics of this wild pastime translating into the embodied thrill and joy that keeps us coming back. And we’ve got much ground yet to cover.

We hope you’ll join us this weekend tuning up some of our favorite Gorham trails at the Hamblen area, and the weekend after that in Portland for the groundbreaking of our first MTB-oriented trail with Portland Trails in many years. Summer is just getting started…

GPNEMBA and Gorham Bike & Ski – Trail work, BBQ and Ride this Sunday

Come join us for a fun day of trail work on the Hamblen trails and BBQ at The Hop Yard! Get your hands dirty helping tune up the Hamblen trails (including popular descents such as Nugget and Galaxy) followed by BBQ from our friends at Gorham Bike and Ski, and then a ride for those that are keen.

  • Trail work: 9:30 – 1:00
  • BBQ: 1:00 – 2:00
  • Group Rides starting at 2:00

Make sure to wear sturdy shoes, bring your work gloves, water and don’t forget the bug spray. Tools will be  provided. Let’s work together to keep our trails in top shape! RSVP here.

Help us break ground on our first MTB-oriented trail with Portland Trails Sunday, June 29

We’re excited to announce our first collaboration with Portland Trails in many years — a new 3/4-mile, MTB-oriented “flowy XC” trail within Fore River Sanctuary designed to make for the most fun and flow when ridden from north (near Jewell Falls) to south! As Portland Trails has made great headway in augmenting their trails for use as transportation corridors, we’re working to mix back in more and better recreation-focused trails across the city, and we’re thrilled to launch this partnership with them in 2025 in Fore River Sanctuary.

The layout of this trail has been professionally designed by Maine Trail Builders to make the most of the vertical relief, stellar dirt, and rolling terrain of FRS. We’re excited to start cutting in this trail with the help of GPNEMBA volunteers and offer MTB-oriented, car-free, world-class riding right in Portland.

We’ll be building this new trail entirely with volunteers, and we’ll be breaking ground on Sunday, June 29. RSVP here and be sure to sign up for our Portland Trail Crew to stay in the loop on ongoing construction.

Plus a bevy of upcoming group rides!

Aside from trailwork days, our group rides have been hammering singletrack in earnest! The good times are rolling every single week across Greater Portland, with rides coming up in Blackstrap, Portland, and Gorham.

  • Intro to Blackstrap ride. Monday, June 23, 5:30-7:30. No-drop medium ride touring the best of Blackstrap, which if you haven’t ridden before is on average more technical, punchier, and more descending-oriented than other networks around town.
  • Our Weekly Wednesday ride Portland Trails this Wednesday, June 25th. A 15-18-mile loop on The Portland Trails network with pavement connecting flat and flowy trails, some technical, rocky/rooty trails, some gravel paths, and a mixed bag of other terrain and conditions that will require some fitness and MTB handling skills.
  • GPNEMBA Pride Ride at Weeks/Moody’s on Monday, June 30. This ride is designed for queer-identifying riders who bike singletrack trails occasionally to regularly and are comfortable with some small climbs, occasional roots and rocks, and moderate pace. This ride is a chance to connect with fellow queer riders, build community, and celebrate Pride! (Thanks volunteer Hal for putting this together!)
  • GPNEMBA Women’s Ride. Sunday, July 6, 5:30. Meeting at Payson Park and touring the Portland trails.
